The American Society of Home Inspectors is the leading national professional organization of independent home inspectors and is the recognized authority in this field. ASHI sets the highest standards of performance and qualifies its members through examination of their technical knowledge and home inspection experience. In addition, home inspectors who have been admitted to ASHI must follow a strict Code of Ethics.
The primary mission of the Independent Home Inspectors of North American is to help make prospective homebuyers aware of the potential or inherent conflict of interest when a person selling a house also recommends the person/s to inspect it.
IHINA also advocates for home buyers by encouraging state and provincial legislators to enact amendments to real estate licensing laws that would add a "firewall" between real estate agents and home inspectors. This would give home buying consumers a "real" opportunity of choosing their own home inspector. Even if an agent hands out a list of 3 or 5 inspectors, who determines which inspectors are on that list? How does an inspector qualify to be included on such a selective list? MA is the only state at present that has such homebuyer consumer protection legislation.
